Hi, everyone! My name is Emily “E” Gillis and I’m a member of 3 Star CrossFit in Mount Juliet, TN and Faith Rx’d Nashville. Prior to CrossFit, I did gymnastics for 16 years and competed at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on the Warhawk Gymnastics team. I graduated in 2012 from UWW with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and knew I needed something to fill the void left by my gymnastics career ending. I started dabbling with CrossFit and was instantly hooked!

I love how similar CrossFit is to gymnastics with the high-quality coaching, the technicality of the movements, the amazing camaraderie among CrossFit athletes around the world, and the fact that it continues to fuel my competitive fire.

Bodyweight workouts quickly became my favorites since I’d been doing most of those movements since I was a little girl, but the weightlifting side of the CrossFit world was completely new to me. I was admittedly terrified of the barbell until about two years into my CrossFit journey when I finally realized how fun it is to throw some weight around! Fast-forward to today, and I’ve finally gained some confidence under the bar thanks to my amazing coaches. I still have a long way to go, but I feel stronger than ever and I love it!

Outside CrossFit, you can find me in my other gym home—Intrigue Athletics. I’m so blessed to have my dream job of coaching gymnastics and helping kids of all ages unwrap their true potential. I got my CF-L1 cert back in June 2014, and whether it’s at gymnastics or CrossFit I LOVE seeing the joy on people’s faces when they master a new skill!

Looking to the future, I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the rest of my CrossFit journey. I’m so grateful for the incredible support from my family, friends, coaches and the Barbell VooDoo crew. I’d love to invite you to come along with me on this exciting ride! Look for me at local competitions, come hang out at Faith Rx’d Nashville, and find me on Instagram @egillis2012. Let’s go on this adventure together! :)
